Chlorine only does its job inside a narrow window. Miss the window and you are paying for chemicals that are not working.
The chlorine reading on a test strip counts two different things at once. Only one of them, hypochlorous acid, is the fast acting sanitiser. The split between them is set by pH, and pH moves on its own: rain dilutes it, heat and aeration push it up, swimmers, sunscreen and topping up from the tap all shift it.
That is the part a strip cannot show you. Two pools can read the same chlorine level and be doing completely different amounts of work.
The catch: this curve is for water with no stabiliser in it. Nearly every outdoor pool in Queensland runs cyanuric acid to stop the sun burning chlorine off, and that changes the maths. Which is the whole point: your numbers depend on your pool, your surface and your sanitiser. That is what the free test is for.
As pH climbs, more of your chlorine converts to the slow form. The reading on the strip barely moves, so nothing looks wrong until algae takes the opening. By then you are shocking the pool instead of maintaining it.
Costs you: chemicals, and a green pool
Low pH and low alkalinity make water corrosive. It goes looking for the minerals it is short of and pulls them out of whatever it touches: the surface, the fittings, and the metal inside your heater. Alkalinity is the buffer that stops pH swinging in the first place.
Costs you: surfaces, fittings, heaters
Push calcium and pH the other way and dissolved minerals come out of solution as scale. It shows on the tile line, but it also grows inside the equipment, on salt cell plates and heater elements, where it chokes performance long before anyone notices.
